Spyro has arrived on the grim neon streets of Stray in a new mod that turns a feline adventure into a serpent’s sojourn.
As Stray’s silent cat jumped into Doom, a significantly more scaly creature came to replace it. the blunt name Mod Spyro the Dragon (opens in new tab) swaps Stray’s furry hero for the classic purple mascot.
The mod lets you play as Spyro and replaces every other cat you find in the game with another dragon of a different color or pattern. Using the Spyro character model from the 2018 Spyro Reignited Trilogy, the dragon’s high-res textures make it fit perfectly in the stranger-than-fiction city of Stray.
This is a mod, so you will need to run Stray on PC to make it work. If you’re a PS5 or PS4 owner, you’re in luck of a different kind, as console gamers can play Stray for free with this cool trick.
Spyro fits the role surprisingly well. Despite being a fire-breathing dragon, he is similar in size to Stray’s tabby, allowing him to fit into the cyberpunk world without much of a discrepancy. It also helps that he is a very friendly guy and rivals even the cutest cat in cuteness.
With no official Spyro game announced to be in development, fans of the 3D platformer may have to make do with this mod for now. Stray’s single-button jump can’t rival the fluid aerial platforming of the original series, though it’s arguably the best when you’re not doing anything. Even Insomniac, the original development studio behind Spyro, is on board, tweet (opens in new tab) support for the mod.
The creator CelticDragon85 says (opens in new tab) they’re also looking forward to seeing Stray’s cat replaced by Pokémon’s Eevee or Mew, so stay tuned for more fury imposters coming to the game. If anyone could combine these skins with the Stray split-screen multiplayer mod, we would be ready.
