Potential spoilers for The Rings of Power follow.
The Rings of Power cast already know the true identity of The Stranger and which one is really playing Sauron.
Speaking exclusively to following the airing of Episode 6 of The Rings of Power, Morfydd Clark – who plays Galadriel – hinted that the cast of the Prime Video show knows the answers to the high fantasy series’ two biggest mysteries. Unsurprisingly, though, Clark gave no further clues as to which character Sauron is disguising himself as, or who Daniel Weyman’s mighty Stranger really is.
Asked if any cast members know the answers to The Rings of Power’s biggest secrets, a wry smile Clark joked, “Maybe. The interesting thing about Sauron is that he’s everywhere. It is despair and doubt.”
Ever since the first teaser for The Rings of Power dropped online in February, die-hard Lord of the Rings fans and more casual viewers have posited theories about the Stranger’s true identity. Also, many have pondered which of the 22 main characters in the series is Sauron in disguise.
Weyman’s Stranger, who fell to Middle-earth in a meteor in the opening episode of the Prime Video show, displayed both magical and dangerous abilities during the first season of The Rings of Power. the most likely option is that he is Gandalf. This is due to his growing relationship with the Harfoots, one of the three precursor races to the Hobbits.
It is Sauron’s identity, however, that has kept the rumor going in recent weeks. Fans have suggested anyone from Joseph Mawle’s Adar, who finally debuted in Episode 3 of The Rings of Power, to Charlie Vickers’ Halbrand, and even The Stranger as the individual Sauron is in disguise.
Interestingly, it’s not just those watching Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV show who have discussed which cast member was actually playing Sauron. Tyroe Muhafidin, who plays Theo, exclusively told that the show’s cast also tried to get to the bottom of the Sauron mystery before starting to receive official scripts.
“In January 2020, when we only received the first two scripts, Markella [Kavenagh]nazanin [Boniadi] and we get together for dinner and play Monopoly,” Muhafidin said. “Halfway through the game, we stopped the game and started coming up with crazy theories. Markella said ‘Oh, what if Charlie is Sauron? What if Theo is Sauron?’, so I replied jokingly ‘What if Nori is Sauron?’.
“Every time we get a new script, we read it to find out who it was. So we went through what fans are currently going through, just a year or two earlier. Now we’re seeing fans have the same theories and it’s been truth interesting to watch.”

With just two episodes left in The Rings of Power season one, audiences are hoping that one of these two mysteries will be solved. If any of them are, it will be a long wait for possible answers in season two. Amazon Studios has renewed the TV show for another release, and as Robert Aaramyo – who plays Elrond – told in September, filming should begin sometime in the next month or two.
“We’ll be shooting very soon,” Clark confirmed when asked for an update on when principal photography would begin. “I’m really excited about it because it’s going to be really nice to get back with the cast and meet a new crew.”
