EVGA has just reduced the price of its entry-level RTX 3090 Ti graphics card to $1,000 below the US MSRP, in a clear sign that high-end GPU prices are still rapidly dropping.
Yes, an eagle-eyed Twitter inhabitant has noticed that there is a clear thousand dollars off FTW3 Gaming model (opens in new tab)which has a recommended price of $2,150 and is now $1,150 on the card maker’s online store, so it’s now pretty close to half the price.
Damn, but did Jay say buy it now? pic.twitter.com/G96qqouSqHAugust 6, 2022
The FTW3 Ultra Gaming model isn’t much more expensive at $1,200, coming with a slightly higher boost speed (so it’s certainly another option in case the base FTW3 graphics card is sold out).
Note that the official MSRP for the RTX 3090 Ti is $2,000 (£1,879, AU$2,499), but EVGA has given a small premium on their FTW3 versions due to the beefed-up cooling systems that allow the GPU to run a little longer. fast.
Analysis: Buy or wait?
To put that price in perspective with the rest of the lineup, EVGA’s RTX 3080 Ti is priced at $1,100 right now, so you can get the 3090 Ti for just fifty bucks more, making it a total no-brainer for anyone who wants one. EVGA’s top-end Ampere at the moment (assuming the PC case, thermals, and PSU can handle the 3090 Ti, of course).
As you may remember, recently Nvidia officially reduced the RTX 3090 Ti to $1,500 (along with price cuts for other top-tier Ampere graphics cards), but the main GPU seems to be dropping rapidly even from that reduced level. At Newegg you can buy a Zotac 3090 Ti for $1,240 now, for example, but EVGA’s price cuts that down by nearly another hundred dollars.
Something we’ve heard constantly lately is that Nvidia’s partners have overstocked RTX 3000 cards to clean up, and this seems like a pretty clear indication that this could indeed be the case.
It’s certainly a big price reduction from EVGA, and if the next-gen Lovelace GPUs are getting any closer to launch now, the first to come out will supposedly be the RTX 4090 – so it makes sense that the biggest discounts would be applied to the top end of the RTX 3090. and the 3090 Ti first, as they will quickly become less tempting propositions as the Lovelace release deadline approaches.
What could happen now is that more graphics card makers lower their prices on the 3090 Ti (and maybe other high-end Nvidia models), and we could see a rush to sell them – potentially. That said, if we’re already looking at almost half the price, there has to be a limit to how low things go, and at its current price point, the EVGA RTX 3090 Ti doesn’t look too bad to say the least.
On the other hand, when the Lovelace arrives, the RTX 4070 is rumored to be the same as the 3090 Ti (or maybe even a touch faster) – but it’s expected to be the most popular model of the high-end Lovelace offerings, so buy it. it on MSRP can be a challenge (or even buy it, perhaps, initially). Especially if the 4070 offers a jaw-dropping price for the performance value proposition as speculation seems to suggest.
And with the RTX 4070 potentially not arriving this year, as another rumor claims, snatching the RTX 3090 Ti when it gets even cheaper might not be such a bad move after all – at least for those who don’t have the patience to see how Lovelace launches. and the stock situation unfold. We still advise waiting, but again, we would understand those who want to make the leap now…
