A new trailer for Final Fantasy 16 has just been released and it’s loaded with new stories about the game world of Valisthea, its kingdoms, and the mighty eikons at the epicenter.
Final Fantasy 16 is still slated for ‘Summer 2023’ (likely between June and September), but the PS5 exclusive seems to be shaping up to be something very special. The latest trailer gives us updates on the game’s multitude of warring kingdoms.
We see a lot of new characters as well as more scenes with the ones we were introduced to in previous trailers. A particular focus is on Dominants, people who can transform into giant, devastating eikons. These eikons will be familiar to longtime Final Fantasy fans as they take the form of summons like Ifrit, Phoenix, Odin, Garuda, and Bahamut, to name just a few.
The trailer also reminds us how much Final Fantasy 16 is a departure from most of the last two decades of the series. Developer Creative Business Unit 3 (which also runs Final Fantasy 14 and its expansions) appears to be building a medieval world closer to the earlier games in the series, rather than the strong sci-fi leanings of more contemporary entries.
An eikonic entrance?
We may still be in the dark as to when, exactly, we’ll have Final Fantasy 16 on our hands, but this latest trailer makes it seem like it will be worth the wait.
As an avid fan of Final Fantasy 14, I see it as a mark of quality that so many of your key team members are working on FF16, including composer Masayoshi Soken, art director Hiroshi Minagawa, and localization lead Michael-Christopher Koji Fox. . Oh, and it’s great to see Devil May Cry 5 combat director Ryota Suzuki also lend his decades of talent to the game.
And speaking of combat, while I’ve loved every trailer for Final Fantasy 16 so far, I really hope we get a deep dive into gameplay soon. We’ve already seen a pretty healthy amount of Valisthea, at least at surface level. In comparison, we only saw brief snippets of combat. It would be great to see a trailer showing what protagonist Clive (and any potential group members who might join him) is really made of.
